How to increase productivity while working remotely?

The rise of telecommuting has changed forever the working style. Now, the needs and worries of employees are different. Keeping a standard company policy won’t be enough in the modern virtual context. To have a good people management, companies have to play a more active role to face the challenges this new scenario presents and keep productivity while working remotely.

Do you want to embrace remote working but don’t want it to affect company’s performance?  At T2W we have experience managing remote work teams, so we can help you. In this article we will show you some of the actions you should implement to have a better transition from a physical work environment to a virtual one.

1. Provide work equipment

While embracing home office offers significant savings for the company, it’s still necessary to make some investments. What kind of investments are we talking about? Well, since employees are working from home, what tools and equipment will they use? Do they have all the necessary? To start, workers need laptops for work. After all, an organization that ask them to use their personal computer for the company’s business is not thinking about employee wellness.

On the other hand, it’s a good idea to provide ergonomic chairs and desks to care about employees’ physical health. Additionally, it’s reasonable to also offer headphones to communicate with teammates. These are minimum expenses, but they can have significant results to enhance employee performance from home. These are also some of the benefits organizations can offer as part of their employee value proposition.

2. Respect the disconnection from work

In a survey conducted this year, a group of more than 2,000 workers was asked what was their main challenge while working from home. 25% of the participants expressed that having problems to disconnect was the main problem today. This is an issue companies shouldn’t overlook. In fact, one of the effects of the pandemic in companies was a visible increase in cases of burnout syndrome due to some companies’ disregard for the disconnection from work.

Respecting the working hours is very important for professionals today. The modern workforce, comprised mainly of Millennials, places high value in their peace of mind. Many people wouldn’t hesitate to quit a job if they feel that there isn’t respect for the working hours.  Therefore, offering a balance between the professional and personal life not just benefits employees, but it also has a positive effect on company performance and it reduces employee turnover rate.

3. Offer flexible hours

The future of business is closely related to the digital world and the possibilities technology offers. Therefore, a virtual work environment requires company policies that consider this new scenario. Working from home opens a new world of possibilities for employees and one of the most attractive ones is having flexible working hours.

This allows employees to complete their tasks through different moments of the day, free from defined working hours. Of course, they work the corresponding working hours, but in a free and flexible way. This entails a working style focused reaching objectives in a medium and long term. This helps people find balance between personal and professional life.

4. Foster constant communication

productivity while working remotely

In a work environment where people work together but miles away, it’s important to have a good communication level. After all, it’s not easy having the same level of communication that there used to be when the team shared the same physical space. For this reason, when we talk about effective remote working, we must emphasize communication.

Here, technology works in your favor. Cloud services platforms such as Google Drive or Microsoft Teams have features that allow quick and simple calls and videoconferences among the members of the same company. Keep in mind that a call can help you coordinate projects and avoid misunderstanding. This must be an important part of any remote working culture. In a world where it’s possible to speak with other people just by making a single click, effective communication shouldn’t be a problem.

5. Create interaction between employees

Finally, since employees don’t share the same physical space, they have less opportunities to interact, get to know each other and build trust. In the long term, this prevents new employees to familiarize with their teammates. That is a problem because if a human group wants to work together effectively, it’s necessary to keep good communication and to achieve that there needs to be certain level of trust.

For this reason, one of the best practices for remote working is fostering integration among all company employees. This can be achieved through meetings held at the office or remotely. You can use birthdays or any other special dates to gather the team virtually and help them get to know each other. Additionally, you can organize integration picnics and similar events.

This are some of the most important actions you can implement to keep a good productivity while working remotely. Adapt the organization to this new work environment and you will have better results.
