What are virtual interview platforms?

Automation and artificial intelligence are characteristics that any modern organization requires if they are looking for increased efficiency. According to a Gartner report, 86% of all companies today use several forms of virtual technology in their recruitment processes. Why is that so relevant? Well, that same number was about 60% before the pandemic.

One of the contributions of technology in the world of recruitment are the virtual interview platforms. Are you familiar with this technology? At T2W we have extensive experience in personnel selection, so we are very familiar with those platforms. In this article, we’ll delve into the modern platforms for virtual job interviews and the way they work.

What is a platform for virtual job interviews?

A virtual interview platform is a modern tool that allows companies and recruiters to simplify recruitment processes through interviews in video. This tool can be used extensively during the candidate interview stage. It’s worth noting that this process is done online and without the intervention of interviewers. Applicants will have to answer questions that have been previously set through video recordings.

How does a platform for virtual job interviews work?

As we previously said, this job interviews software works with video recordings. The organization or the recruiter defines a series of questions that are relevant for the position. These tend to be the same questions commonly used in job interviews, and are related to candidates’ professional experience, academic background and skills.

These platforms are also perfect for another kind of complex questions such as situational questions or behavioral questions. Of course, this is all subject to the criteria the recruiter establishes. It’s important to note that candidates need a desk computer or a mobile device with a camera to record their answers. Each question will be shown in the screen

In general, applicants will have a specific time to answer each question, which ranges from 1 to 3 minutes. Likewise, there is a 30-second space in between questions so that the candidate can prepare. Recruiters don’t need to go to the interview physically or virtually. They just have to evaluate the answers received from the applicants.

This allows recruiters to pay more attention to the answers and the non-verbal communication of each candidate. Keep in mind that the small details can make all the difference between candidates: their tone of voice while answering, their gestures, the care in their garment, etc.

Characteristics of virtual interview platforms

1. Standardized interviews

As we previously explained, these virtual interview platforms use a very specific set of questions. These same questions will be repeated with all applicants. That aligns with the format of a standardized interview. As you know, that type of session is focused on eliminating any possibility of bias in recruitment appearing in the process by asking the same questions to everyone.

As recruiters, we know that the slightest similarity or preconception can change the route of the questions and, as a consequence, the result of the interview. Since in this type of interviews recruiters do not intervene, it’s easier to evaluate candidates based on their answers and not on the influence of the rapport that might be built during the session.

2. Gamification

Many of these platforms include gamification in their interviews. As you know, gamification in recruitment consists of the introduction of gaming elements inside the selection process. This allows candidates to relax and face the process with a different mindset, which is perfect for more sincere answers.

Through video interview software, the candidate has to complete one or more games focused on evaluating skills or knowledge important for the position. These games can be short and help recruiters get to know more about candidates in a context different from that of a job interview.

3. Artificial Intelligence

Another great benefit of these modern interview platforms is that they usually rely heavily on artificial intelligence. For example, a platform such as HireVue, a standard in the market, integrates artificial intelligence in its processes. Through algorithms, it’s possible to identify certain patterns between candidates.

The artificial intelligence this platform has, which uses face and voice recognition software, collects a huge amount of data. The algorithm is responsible for comparing each session with answers of previous interviews to help recruiters have a more detailed analysis of each candidate.

Types of virtual interviews

There are two main variations in the dynamics of virtual interviews. First, we have custom interviews, which are video questions that candidates have to answer in video recording. As we mentioned lines above, there isn’t intervention of recruiters during the interview.

Then, we have live interviews, which are basically the classic video interview format. In this case, the recruiter does intervene and interviews each candidate remotely. This is a post-pandemic standard. Most virtual interview platforms offer both options.
